An opener that hums but does not move the door, blinks without closing, or went dead after a thunderstorm has a specific fault, and the fault is often not the motor. Before replacing anything we separate the opener from the door, because a binding door or a broken spring makes a healthy opener look broken. Chamberlain's diagnostic chart for its wall-mounted openers lists a broken spring or door lock among the first things to check when the door moves a few inches and stops.

With the door cleared, we work through the opener itself: logic board, drive gear or belt, travel and force settings, wall control and the two safety sensors near the floor. The sensors matter most. The same Chamberlain chart traces a door that will not close to sensors that are misaligned or were briefly blocked, and says to realign both until each light is steady. Garage Door Opener Repair — FAQs

My garage door opener hums but the door does not move. What is wrong?
A humming opener that does not move the door has either a door problem or a failed drive part. A broken spring or binding track makes the door too heavy for the motor, and a stripped gear or slipping belt lets the motor run without lifting. Chamberlain's own troubleshooting chart tells owners to try the door by hand and check for a broken spring before replacing the logic board, and we test both sides.
What makes a closing door turn around halfway down?
A door that goes down part way and reverses is reacting to something it senses: the safety sensors near the floor are misaligned or were briefly blocked, or the travel limit and force setting need adjusting. Chamberlain tells owners to realign both sensors until each light is steady and to remove anything hanging on the door that could break the beam. Federal rules require a closing door to reverse within 2 seconds of touching an obstruction, so we set the opener to pass that test and never to silence the symptom.
Can lightning damage a garage door opener?
Yes. A nearby strike or surge can burn out the logic board or the receiver while the lights still work. Florida led all states in lightning in 2022, so it is a regular cause here. We test the board, receiver and wall control, replace what failed and suggest a surge protector.
How high should the safety sensors be mounted?
No higher than six inches above the floor, one on each side of the door, facing each other. DASMA gives that six-inch rule because a higher beam lets a child or pet pass underneath unseen. Openers manufactured after 1992 must have this second safety reversing feature, and DASMA says an opener without one should be replaced.
Is it worth repairing an older garage door opener?
It is when the failed part is a board, gear, belt or sensor and the rest of the unit is sound. It is not when the opener lacks a second safety reversing feature such as photo-eyes, which DASMA says calls for a new opener, or when the door itself is out of balance and is wearing the motor out. We say which case yours is.
