Off-Track Garage Door Repair

A garage door that has jumped its track is a full stop: do not run the opener again and do not stand under it. A garage door can weigh well over a hundred pounds, and it is now supported by parts that were not designed to carry that load in that position. Each attempt to move it can twist sections, kink the track or snap a cable. DASMA's guidance is to stop operating a door as soon as a problem is seen and to call a trained technician.
Doors rarely derail without a reason, so the repair has three parts. First we clamp and support the door so it cannot fall or shift. Second we find the cause: a snapped cable, a bent or loose track, worn rollers, a bent bottom bracket, or an impact from a car or storm debris. Third we repair that cause, rebuild the alignment and reseat every roller. If the cause is left in place, the door will jump again.
How to Tell a Door Has Left Its Track
- A roller visibly out of the track channel, top or bottom
- The door hanging crooked or wedged partway
- A crash or bang, then a door that will not move
- Cables slack, tangled or off their drums
- A bottom corner pushed out past the line of the track
- A door that was hit by a car, a ladder or storm debris

Impact is the usual local trigger. After a high-wind event DASMA tells technicians to check for loose or twisted track, rollers no longer seated in the track and slack cables, because hidden damage can leave a door one cycle from jumping its rails. In our experience wind-driven debris and bumper strikes cause most derailments here. Keep the door closed and leave it alone until it has been checked, because a working opener can drag a damaged door into a worse state.
