A door that squeals, chatters or shudders in the track usually has worn rollers, and the plainest wheels on a builder-grade door often have no sealed bearings at all. Rollers carry the weight of the door every time it moves, and the rest of the system pays when they wear: hinges bend, the track wears, and the opener works harder against the friction.
Rollers are not all alike. Garaga, a door manufacturer, sorts them into black rubber rollers without ball bearings, steel rollers with ball bearings, and nylon rollers that run quieter, and it recommends at least ten bearings in steel and twelve in nylon. Most residential doors take a 2-inch wheel. We replace rollers set by set with the door secured, and the bottom rollers are left to the technician because the bottom brackets sit under extreme tension.

Exposed bearings are the weak point in a damp climate. Moisture works into an open bearing, rust locks the wheel, and a locked wheel scrapes the track instead of rolling in it. Sealed ball-bearing rollers keep the moisture out, and nylon wheels do not rust. On wind-rated doors the replacement roller has to match the door: DASMA notes that extended roller lengths and higher-strength roller bearings can be critical to a door's performance, so a roller that merely looks similar is not a safe substitute.
